The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any major prize-giving event nears, there’s always an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
