Zohran Mamdani Pledges a 'New Era' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Speech
During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” New York City, ushering in “a different age” and an audacious commencement to his administration.
A Historic Figure
The new figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.
“A time such as this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.
Ignoring counsel to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”
Governing with Democratic Socialist Ideals
Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my convictions for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.
The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.
A Costly Policy Agenda
